Bay Cup 10 - SAILING REPORT

“The 2007/2008 Batemans Bay Sailing Club Bay Cup
series reached a thrilling conclusion on Saturday when the final event of the
ten race series was sailed. It was a very pleasant day for sailing with balmy
skies and a 10 to 15 knot sea breeze blowing. Race Officer Peter Connell set a
start line with some boat end bias. Some biff and barge resulted at the start
but, amazingly, no protests were lodged. When the thirteen teams that were
sailing settled in up the first work to the Toll Gates mark it was those who
went left who did best. In particular the S80s “Avior” (Peter
Smith), “Periwinkle” (Geoff Perrem) and “Juicy Fruit”
(Michael O’Brien) sailed fast in the relatively smooth seas. They proved
difficult for some of the bigger boats to shake off. The next leg was a run to
the Wimbie Beach mark followed by a tight reach to the laid mark off Snapper
Island. “Wishful Thinking” (Andrew Bain), “Shot In The Dark”
(Simon Byrne) and “Fractious” (Tim Devlin) were able to carry asymmetrical
spinnakers on this leg and made up ground. “Moon Mist” (Roger
Whyte) put in some excellent spinnaker work with only three aboard the 34
footer.  “Periwinkle” and “The Shed”(Ron Spelman)
both tacked off to the right at the leeward mark – a poor move in the
backing breeze as “Ghoster” (Lachlan Brown) had already
demonstrated on the first work. The other two S80s made no such mistakes  on
the last windward and return legs to collect the honours on both PHS and IRC.
